Common Types of Commercial Door Locks

Boostability Team • Feb 02, 2023

Door locks are available in different grades, each with a different level of reliability and security. Also, door locks have different levels of cost, strength, and durability. Discover the main types of door locks for commercial premises.

Keyless Entry

Keyless entry means you do not need a key to open the lock. Instead, you have to enter a security number or passcode to open the door. Keyless doors have a magnetic lock without any functional doorknobs or levers. The magnet is usually above the frame and uses a sensor to open the door.

Mortise Locks

Mortise locks are highly durable and effective for businesses with high foot traffic. The main components of the locks are the cylinder and the body parts. The cylinder contains the key, while the body has the locking mechanism. This configuration makes mortise locks perfect for frequent use.

The reliability of mortise locks is because the deadbolt section of the lock is deep within the body of the lock. In addition, you must drill a pocket into the door to install the mortise lock.

Commercial Panic Crash Bar

Panic crash bars have a simple working mechanism where you push a bar to open the door. These locks are popular in commercial businesses and help during emergencies. You can place panic bars in areas with specific fire requirements. Commercial panic crash bar doors are popular but need regular maintenance to ensure proper working.

Restricted Key Systems

These commercial locks prevent unauthorized parties from making duplicate keys. Instead, only a specialty locksmith, manufacturer, or authorized dealer can make duplicate keys with your knowledge. Also, the keys are harder to pick open.

Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt locks usually work together with other types of doors to provide an added layer of protection. The lock has a thumb-turn or keylock to unlock the bolt. Deadbolt locks are usually heavier and larger than typical spring latches. Also, the locks are not angled or rounded but contain brass or steel for extra strength.

When you turn the key in a deadbolt lock, the bolt will enter the strike plate of your door frame. The lack of a spring makes it more difficult for a burglar to jam open the door with a crowbar or other tools. Instead, the lock has a unique locking mechanism that adds another layer of resistance and strength.

Cylindrical Locks

Cylindrical locks are available in many grade levels, functions, and styles. The two main types of cylindrical locks are the cylindrical knob lock and the cylindrical lever lock.

Cylindrical lever locks are easy to install and have a handle for easy operation. To install the lock, a technician will bore two circular openings in your door. The lock also includes a lever lock that regulates the movement of the bolt.

Cylindrical knob locks have a knob on either side of the door. This type of lock is ideal for interior doors that do not require much security.
